Magic and How it Works
Magic Overview
“One of the things a lot of people don’t understand about magic is that the rules of how it works aren’t hard-and-fast; they’re fluid, changing with time, with the seasons, with location, and with the intent of a practitioner. Magic isn’t alive in the sense of a corporeal, sentient being, but it does have a kind of anima all its own. It grows, swells, wanes, and changes.†– Excerpt from Ghost Story, a novel of the Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher.
That quotation more or less sums up the nature of magic in Urban Fantasy worlds, and in the world of this RP. While certain types of practitioners have to adhere to certain rules and limitations, the most prevalent of which is the transfer of energy, there is a wide range of creativity that can go into how they summon those powers for the heat of battle or more complex spells.
Different Types of Practitioners
Magic can be used for a wide variety of things, and this list is by no means exhaustive and it is meant to grow, but it should provide inspiration for those not sure about what to choose. While a character may be more adept to one type of magic than another (for instance, someone might be better at psychomancy, but that doesn’t mean they can’t do necromancy or thermomancy, just that it’s MUCH harder for them). Again, this list is not exhaustive. You are limited to the scope of magic only by your imagination.
Thermomancy --- deals with fire, largely combat-oriented.
Psychomancy --- deals with the mind.
Necromancy --- magic dealing with death, resurrection, and communion with dead spirits.
Kinetics --- Magic dealing with raw force.
Healing --- Magic that can be used to heal.
